Not in My Park: An Invitation to Remove Amur Honeysuckle from Fairview Park

Covering nearly 200 acres, Fairview Park is the oldest park in Decatur and is often referred to as the most beautiful in the area. With multiple pavilions, a bike path, playground areas, dog park, skate park and creek, the park offers something for everyone from socialization, fun, sporting events to relaxation. Currently, the beauty of Fairview Park is threatened by a fast spreading bush knows as Amur Honeysuckle.

Join University of Illinois Extension, the Macon County Conservation District, Decatur Park District and others to help rid Decatur’s oldest park of a new invader-Amur Honeysuckle. This invasive bush is taking over areas of the park, hindering the growth of native wildflowers and other species.

This community effort will take place April 1, 2017. Volunteers will meet at the Fairview Park pool area at 9am and work in teams until noon to remove the honeysuckle. Volunteers should bring lopers, pruners and gloves.

For questions or additional information, please contact Beth or Brittani at 217.877.6042.
