University of Illinois Extension Offering Rabbitry Workshop – Raising Rabbits for Meat

Join University of Illinois Extension’s Local Foods and Small Farms Program and the Decatur Area Rabbit Breeders for an informative workshop about raising rabbits for food. Raising rabbits is easy and time efficient. Domestic rabbits are highly valued for their low fat, low cholesterol and high quality proteins. Rabbit meat compares well with chicken, turkey and some fish for its beneficial health virtues.

This workshop will cover topics such as breeds that yield the best meat, basic health and shelter needs of rabbits, proper bedding, how to feed them and how to prepare them for butchering. Participants will also have an opportunity to taste locally raised rabbit.

The workshop will be 9am-noon on Saturday, April 7 at the Macon County Extension Office located at 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd. in Decatur. Cost is $10 per person or $15 per family. Registration by April 3 is required by visiting or calling 217.877.6042. For additional information, contact Doug Gucker at 217.877.6042 or
