Lifestyle Choices for Wellness

Timely discussion on topics of health and wellness to encourage action and improvement in personal wellness.

7/19/2012- What is Wellness?

As a "nutrition and wellness professional" I get asked the same questions a lot: "what do you do/eat?...is this bad for me?...how do I get to be like you?" Firstly, I am by no means the picture of wellness, but it is something I am passionate about. That's why I have made it my career.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines wellness as "the condition of good physical, mental and emotional health, especially when maintained by an appropriate diet, exercise, and other lifestyle modifications." Our society seems to have "turned on" to the importance of health and the idea that we can and should make a difference in our personal health and well-being. Hype aside, there are some very good reasons Americans need to be concerned about the lives they lead. The leading cause of death and disability in our country are due, in part, to our unhealthy behaviors. We are killing ourselves by what we eat, what we do or don't do, how we interact with others, and how we abuse the environment in which we live.

So I ask you now to pose these questions to yourself: How healthy do you feel? What are the greatest threats to your health? What difference might it make if today you began to change your lifestyle in certain ways? What are your goals?
It is through asking yourself how truly content you are with yourself that you will find the desire or motivation to want to change.
Through this blog I aim to share information on hot/interesting topics, dispel nutrition/wellness myths, offer advice for FAQs, and share honest accounts of my real life with hopes that something will resonate with readers to initiate lifestyle awareness and encourage positive change!
