Master Gardener Projects - Long Term

  • Chillicothe Community Garden……418 W Wilmot, Chillicothe is a new startup community garden and a great learning and teaching opportunity for MG’s and interns.  The work times are "daylight hours." Opening Day is tentatively set for Saturday, May 7. Project Chair- Pat Wehage
  • Dig It Blog……A team of MGs blog regularly for this Peoria Journal Star blog about garden topics and to promote Extension and the MG program. Contact Patricia if you want to blog. Project Chair- Patricia Middleton
  • Forrest Hill Organic Community Garden….. 706 E. Forrest Hill, Peoria is a cooperative project started by community members who were interested in learning to grow food locally and organically in a more sustainable and nutrient rich way. MG’s and interns are welcome to become part time or ongoing supporters of this project.  There are many opportunities for helping less experienced people and learning from more experienced people.  There are several group work days during the growing season, but much of the weeding, watering, and general garden maintenance is done by individual members throughout the year.  Project Chair- Harry Elger
  • Holy Family Church’s  St. Fiacre Gardens......Volunteer workdays are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9-12 starting April 2, 2016. Project Chair Bob Reading
  • Hort. Help Line.…..(walk-in, telephone, mail, & email) answering questions on flowers, vegetables, insects, plant disease, turf, trees, and landscaping. Co-chairs: Patricia Middleton and Michelle Campen. 
  • ICC..….(Illinois Central College Land Laboratory in E. Peoria) Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford Master Gardeners plan and maintain demonstration gardens for the public and host educational events throughout the growing season. Monthly (informational) meetings are the First Thursday of month at 6:30 at Hort. Classroom, (March through October) most of the time.   Peoria workdays are Tuesday mornings, but volunteers can come on any day. Project Chair-Phil Adams
  • Jubilee Butterfly Garden…...11817 W. Jubilee College Rd., Brimfield. Work days are Thursday’s from 9:00-12:00, and other days as needed. Volunteers are always welcome to take part in being "docents" in the college, helping with the prairies and butterfly garden restoration. Project Chair-Patricia Melaik
  • Jubilee Prairie Dawgs…...Prairie restoration and conservation of native plants at Jubilee College State Park.  Work days are 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month 9:00-12.   • North Valley Community Garden...635 Spitznagle Ave,  Peoria is a cooperative project started by North Valley community members  who are  interested in teaching local adults, children and families  how to grow their own produce. Project Chair- Jon Anderton
  • Peoria Academy’s Outdoor Education Center Gardens (P.A.O.E.C.).…Peoria Academy,2711 W. Willow Knolls Drive, Peoria, IL 61614. Work days are Thursdays at 6 p.m.  You can contact Adair if you would like to come at a different time. Project Chair-Adair Feather
  • Peoria Farmers Market at Peoria Riverfront. Get gardening info and Master Gardeners answer gardening questions. Held Saturdays from May 21-last Sat. in Sept. , 2016. Set up begins at 8:00am, and the booth is open until Noon. Project Chair-May Bach
  • Prospect United Methodist Church Memorial Garden…. Dunlap, IL, is a memorial garden in a large alcove behind the church with the intent to provide a beautiful spot to memorialize members who had passed and to create a quiet place for reflection.  This is also an opportunity to engage preschool  students in garden activities . Workdays  are Monday and Thursday 9am-11am. Project Chair-Barbara Wickness

  • United Presbyterian Church “Adopt a Garden”….at 2400 W Northmoor Rd in Peoria.  Currently there are 4 gardens that have been adopted.  Kick off will be Saturday, April 23 in the morning. There will also be a quick walk through of all the gardens at the end of the morning for information sharing and perhaps plant sharing. Project Chair-Randy Saxon- 
  • Wildlife Prairie Park......Homestead Garden where produce is grown for animals. Project Chair-Carol Cihla.
  • Wildlife Prairie Park……..Kim St John Butterfly Habitat work days are on Wednesday’s 8:30-11:30, but work can be done at any am. Work starts by meeting in the parking lot by the Ranger Station. When coming through the gate, just say you are here to work on the Butterfly Habitat. Project Chair-Ron Miller.
