Gardeners' BIG Day

Time to THINK SPRING and register for the 17th annual Gardeners’ BIG Day held Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Spoon River College.

Keynote speakers are Melinda Myers and Dr. Michael Wiant. Melinda is a columnist and contributing editor for Birds and Blooms magazine and writes for Gardening How-To magazine. Dr. Wiant has spent his entire professional life with the Illinois State Museum, studying Native American history in the Illinois River Valley and sharing his knowledge and experiences with audiences throughout Illinois.

Morning garden workshop topics and speakers are “Don’t Poison the Pooch” with Terri Dudis DVM, “Creating Your Own Wildlife Habitat” with Dayna Stevenson, “Edible Landscaping” with Rhonda Ferree, “Honeybees and Natural Pollinators” with Jim Wellwood, “Dwarf and Unusual Conifers” with Martha Smith, and “Mystery of the Master Volunteer” with Christine Belless and Julia Pryor.

Afternoon classes includeGardens Around the World” with Sunita Shastry, “Orchids of Illinois” with Larry Stratton, “Create a Pollinator Paradise” with Chris Enroth, “Spoon River College: What's Growing On!” with Jeff Bash, andMaster Gardener Q & A” with Art Holtman, Bob Keene, and Terry Meade

Two hands-on workshops will also be offered.  “Edible Arrangements” with Nancy Hebb teaches ways to carve fruit and vegetables, and Fresh Floral Design Fun!” with Jane Baar and Julia Pryor is a floral design workshop. Both have a material fee.

The event is sponsored by U of I Extension Master Gardeners from Fulton and Mason Counties, Spoon River Garden Club and U of I Extension, Fulton-Mason-Peoria-Tazewell Unit. Vendors, displays, and lunch are included.  Early bird registration by April 10 is $32 at go.illinois.edu/GBD2016 or call 309-543-3308.  Space is limited so early registration is encouraged.
