I was in Big R today, picking up chicken feed for the Embryology in the Classroom projects. As I was walking thru the isles of hatching equipment and supplies I was pleasantly surprised to find special galvanized chicken feeders with the 4-H logo embossed on them. Wow! Who knew?
If you are in need of a new chicken feeder then go check out the ones at Big R. While you're there, be sure to apply for the 4-H discount card.
With the Embryology in the Classroom project, I am incubating fertilized eggs, right along with the classrooms. I have them set up in a corner of my office. So from March 5th thru March 26th the eggs will be kept safe and warm in the incubator. By the 26th, I hope to see some chicks pecking their way out of the shells. By the 30th, I think my office will be very loud with lots of little peeps.
Anytime you are near the office, please stop in and check out the eggs and eventually all the baby chicks. If you would like some baby chicks for your home, give me a call. :)
Each year, we offer Embryology in the Classroom program to Tazewell County school teachers. This year, we are also hatching some in the Tazewell Extension office. We will be looking for good homes for these chicks plus any chicks that the teachers return to us.
If you are interested and have proper housing for chickens, we would love to give them to you. The first round of chickens will be ready to go to their new homes late afternoon on Friday, March 30th. We will have a second round ready on Friday, May 11th.
Please contact Anita at the Tazewell Extension office if you would like to "order" some of the free chicks.
The breed we are hatching this year are White Leghorn. This breed is very athletic, hardy, non-sitters and lay very nice large white eggs The White Leghorn is a prolific layer of white eggs. They produce more eggs on less feed than most chickens.
