Eleven different timber buyers attended sealed-bid openings for three separate timber sales in eastern Iowa.
Sale 1: 127 black walnut, 26 walnut trees field-graded as veneer; averaged $2.10/bd ft throughout for the walnut. Nice sale, but nothing exceptional.
Sale 2: Small black walnut sale; multiple 3SC veneer trees. Walnut, throughout, averaged $2.80/bd ft
Sale 3: 22 black walnut trees; three 4SC veneer trees. Walnut, throughout, averaged $2.22/bd ft
Consulting forester commented that black walnut and white oak prices have peaked the attention of the timber buyers and mills. Starting to see some movement in the red oak market, though red oak stumpage & mill prices have yet to rebound to the levels of years past. The consultant also mentioned that several mills are showing an in interest in hickory.
Comments:
$/bd ft: Stumpage value
4SC: four sides clear (i.e., butt log contains four, defect-free tree faces)
3SC: three sides clear (i.e., butt log contains three, defect-free tree faces)

Additional Comments: Overall, this one of the worst hardwood markets I've seen in 29 years. Some mills are still buying crosstie logs, but many grade/veneer mills have dropped prices so low that selling high-quality timber might not be a good idea this year. We will try to stay in the the low-grade timber at least during the first part of the year. Even the timber mat market for 18-24' rough logs has severely eroded. As related to stumpage and mill-delivered log values, housing starts and new construction will have to rebound in order for the hardwood market to pull itself out of this downward trend.

Additional Comments: Mark reports that the general hardwood market is "poor"; although Mark states that he can still move and sell all species and grades of logs. As most everyone knows, the high fuel costs has made it real tough.
Thanks for the timber report Mark!
