A great way to “get involved” is to join a forestry or landowner organization such as the Illinois Forestry Association, Illinois Tree Farm program, Northwest Illinois Forestry Association, or Illinois Walnut Council. These groups are great sources of additional information that allow forest owners and interested citizens to network among themselves and with natural resource professionals. Feel free to share your thoughts, take note as to what other landowners and forest managers are doing, and find out what's working and what isn't working. Many of these organizations sponsor stewardship workshops, seminars, and field days throughout the state on topics such as timber tax, property tax assessments, intermediate cutting practices, timber harvesting, timber prices, non-forest products (ginseng, mushrooms, leeks), tree planting, wildlife management, recreation, tree identification, and forest management plan writing.
