Barnyard Forensics Solves the Livestock MysteryHow do you increase livestock productivity? How do you keep your herd healthy? What traits do you want in your breeding stock? How do you successfully run your farm business? Uncover the answers in this year's Youth Livestock Conference … Barnyard Forensics: A Livestock Mystery. The conference will be held Feb. 11 & 12 at Hawthorn Suites in Champaign and is open to 4-H members in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. This program provides leadership and team building activities as well as exciting hands-on opportunities built around the science and disciplines of livestock production and exhibition. Order in the Court: Step in to the courtroom with our livestock ethics committee as we discuss good production practices and debate a simple livestock case. Participants will serve as jury, plaintiffs and defendants, and courtroom audience.
Cracking the Chromosomes: Join us as we investigate the world of genetics and the mysteries of electrophoresis. In this session, you will solve the secrets with your sweet tooth as we study genetics and dig deeper into DNA.
Defending the Herd: Keep your eyes open, the Stockyard Stalkers are on the loose! Examine footage to learn motives of anti-ag activists and how to defend your position if "Under Attack"!
4-H Online! This year the 4-H enrollment process is all done ONLINE!
4-H families will now be able to enroll and select their 4-H projects using the new system, 4-H Online. Families create a family profile to enroll all members of their family at once. And, you can see your 4-H information and edit that information all year long from your computer or mobile device. It will be easier to get in touch with you, too. There's an option you can mark to receive text messages so you're never out of the loop with last-minute changes. And, more than one household can receive information, so regardless of which house a member lives, everyone can be informed! To get started, go to our Saline County 4-H website: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/ghhpsw/saline4h/2771.html Scroll down to "How to Enroll Through 4-H Online" and "Letter to New Member" to get all the details. The documents include info on payment options, the $20 Enrollment fee, the waiver for enrolling more than 3 youth in a family, paying by credit card online or bringing your cash or check payment in to the office, etc. When enrolling - Be sure to select the county you wish to join and not the county you live in if they are different.
Saline County 4-H Families…Our area food pantries need our help!
Food supplies at our area food pantries are already low. And the holiday season is upon us. I think Saline County 4-H can do something to help. We would like to have a 2 week food drive to see how much we can collect to assist our friends and neighbors who are in need. So from December 1st to December 15th, we will be collecting non perishable foods items here at the Extension office. Please be as generous as you are able. There will be a collection box here in which to place your items. Nancy will deliver the food to one or more food pantries (depending on the amount of food collected) on December 16th. Let's follow the 4-H Pledge of Hearts and Hands to help our neighbor this holiday season.
Shop with a CopThe Harrisburg Police Department, Saline County Sheriff's Office, and other area law enforcement officers will hold their annual "Shop with a Cop" program on Saturday, December 10th at Harrisburg Walmart. Any middle school and high school 4-H members and adult volunteers who would like to participate should arrive at Harrisburg Walmart between 8:00 - 8:30 am. This is a great way to serve our community and make some area children very happy this Christmas.
