Summer means camp

Open the pages and you'll find lots of applications for some wonderful 4-H Camps. Ask ANY of the older 4-Hers what they like most about 4-H. and they'll say CAMP! We have two 4-H camps to offer this summer. Look inside the newsletter for more information.

Don't forget to set aside July 7-12 for the annual 4-H Show.

Livestock Exhibitors Pay Attention

Sheep Wethers—lambed on or after January 1,2012
Ownership deadline is May 1.
Wether weigh-in is May 5th @ Brown's Feed Store @ 7 AM

Horse
Horses/ponies may be owned or leased. Ownership and lease forms may be obtained from the Extension office or 4-H leader. These forms must be turned in by May 1 in order to participate in the 4-H Horse Show. One form should be filled out for each horse/pony that exhibitor will be showing or possibly showing. If there is no form on file, that animal MAY NOT BE SHOWN. Replacements may be made after May 1 (due to illness, death, etc.) upon proof (vet certificate) and approval by the Ag Committee.

Get Your Speaking Cap On

The White County Public Speaking Contest will be held at 5PM, Tuesday, June 12 at the Extension Office in Carmi. Remember, you must be enrolled in the public speaking project. It's a great skill to develop...give public speaking a try! Call the office to register before June 5. We need to know what category and a title. Check the show book for a list of categories and rules.

Cloverbuds Are Collecting Can Goods!

Over the next few months the Cloverbuds will be collecting can goods for the local food pantries as one of their community services. During our last meeting the Cloverbuds learned about 4-Hers and their community services they do. They chose to collect food for ones less fortunate. When you can bring in can goods for the Cloverbuds!

Final day to decide on projects

The last day to change or add a project is May 1. Check what projects you are currently signed up for. Check the guidebook to see what exhibit you must bring for that project. Tell your leader any change you want to make before May 1. GET STARTED ON YOUR PROJECT EARLY. Spring break is a perfect time to start!

2012 4-H Day With the Cardinals

Saturday, May 12^th, with a 6:15 p.m. start time

The World Series Champion Cardinals are facing the Braves that evening, and with a 6:15 start time, 4-H families should plan to arrive at Busch Stadium by 4:00-4:45 p.m. for the pre-game celebration! Tickets for the game are 24.00 each with includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front.

4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies annually include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member.

Party planned for Graduates

Graduates and their family and friends are invited to a party honoring the 2012 4-H high school graduates. The party, sponsored by the Federation, will be held from 1-2 p.m. Sunday May 6th at the Extension Office.

This year's graduates include: Shelby Hammell, Jonathon Heern, Laurn Hunsinger, Molly Musgraves, Patrick McKenzie, Christine South, and Bryce Williams.

Seniors: The White County David Coston Scholarships have been mailed out. Fill the application out and have it turned into the office by June 29th. They will be awarded on July 11th at the Awards Program right before the Livestock Auction!

4-H DAY WITH the Miners

Your 4-H Club will receive $3 for each ticket sold! All sales are final, no refunds. Tickets are for reserved seating. Seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment must be received with order.

Note: Groups of families or county groups that wish to sit together must order in one package.

Science Rocks!

May 30th, 2012, 1-3pm

We think science rocks, and so will you! Join us for this fun, interactive, hands on workshop as we explore science phenomenon like dry ice, volcanos and more! This workshop will have you up and moving as we explore the mysteries of science! This workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 30^th at the White County Extension Office. Hope to see you there!

4-H Leader's Meeting

Since this is my first year to do a 4-H show I would like ALL leaders and anyone else whom assists with the 4-H show/fair to attend this meeting. We will be setting superintendents and other duties for the show week.

Camps, Camps & More Camps

Southern Region 4-H Camp

Please mark on your calendar the dates for the Southern Illinois Region 4-H Camp, which will be held from June 5-9, 2012 at the 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello. Space will be limited again this year, and bus transportation will also be available. You may register at this website:

Western Kentucky 4-H Camp, Dawson Springs KY

New this year 4-H members from southern Illinois will also have the opportunity to camp at Western Kentucky 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs, Kentucky. This camp offers tons of fun activities from rope courses to horseback riding, swimming, and more! Camp fee is $150, but the first 25 campers from southern Illinois will go for only $50!! What a great deal! The additional $100 will be returned after you attend camp.

4-H Mini-Camp, July 1-3, 2012

Fun and Adventure for kids ages 8-12 years!

Are you new to 4-H Memorial Camp, or would you just rather have a shorter camp experience? Get a taste of most everything offered at our regular week long camp in a setting tailored for younger campers. 4-H Mini-camp is open to all youth, but will focus on activities designed for kids age 8-12 years. Swimming, boating, fishing, crafts, sports, games, songs, hikes, campfires, and lots more. Bring a friend and bunk together in a cool log cabin.

ACCELERATE YOUTH ENTREPENUERSHIP CAMP

June 25-29^th 8:30-3:30, SIC Small Business Development Center

A hands-on camp teaching students going into 6-8^th grade the basics of small business development and entrepreneurship. This 5-day adventure will be a chance for students to develop existing business ideas or learn how to put their ideas to the test. The fee to attend this unique and exciting opportunity is $100. 4-H Youth Development Educator

2012-2014 4-H Youth Leadership Team

The Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team is starting to recruit older Illinois 4-H members and recent 4-H alumni to apply and interview for the 2012-2014 term. We are looking for 4-H teens who have demonstrated leadership abilities and are willing to step forward and assist with programming on the statewide level.

Information regarding the Youth Leadership Team and their activities, along with the YLT application, is available on the Youth Leadership Team page of the 4-H website: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/state4h/members/leadership_sylt.cfm.

The Illinois State 4-H YLT offers older 4-H members and recent 4-H alumni an opportunity to give back to the 4-H program while further enhancing their leadership skills. The Team is actively involved in assisting the State 4-H Office in planning, implementing, and evaluating various 4-H events and activities; reviewing 4-H curriculum; representing Illinois at National 4-H Conference; and serving as a "youth voice" of the Illinois 4-H Youth Development Program.
