Weekly Update 4-14-2014

1. 4 inch soil temp: 43.4 degrees F.  Still very cold.

2. What should be planted now by direct seeding in the ground; radish, spinach, lettuce, turnips, beets.

3 Getting the entire family out in the garden can sometimes be more rewarding than an actual harvest. With kids think big! Sunflowers, watermelon and pumpkins are all great plants to get children interested in growing. Click on the links for more growing information.

4. Start peas indoors if the ground is too wet for planting. They can be planted in the garden a week or two later.

5. Blanching is a must for almost all vegetables to be frozen. It stops enzyme actions which can cause loss of flavor, color and texture. Learn the basics of blanching here!
