News Release

I on Diabetes by University of Illinios Extension and Midwest Medical Center

The University of Illinois Extension and Midwest Medical Center are teaming up to offer a four-part program called, I on Diabetes, in Jo Daviess County. I on Diabetes program is a four part series, consisting of 3-hour sessions, designed for anyone interested in preventing or managing diabetes.

There are 3 main types of diabetes: Type 1 which results when the body loses its ability to produce insulin. Type 2 is a result of a combination of resistances to the action of insulin and insufficient insulin production. Gestational diabetes is a common complication of pregnancy and is also a risk factor for subsequent development of Type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. In the 2016 Midwest Medical Center Community Health Needs Assessment it was found that approximately 12% of Jo Daviess County adults had a form of diabetes.

This dynamic program provides information on understanding the fundamentals of diabetes, establishing healthy goals, and the importance of self-management. Participants gain an understanding of how meal planning plays a vital role in the management of diabetes and increased knowledge of how key nutrients such as carbohydrates, fat, sodium and cholesterol affects their diabetes management. In addition to learning about diabetes, participants receive tasty recipes, watch cooking demonstrations and receive delicious samples.

The goal of the, I on Diabetes, program is to help you improve your diabetes care and overall wellbeing. This program will complement the recommendations of your health care provider, and help you and/or your loved one better manage diabetes.

I on Diabetes, will meet on the following dates: Wednesday, October 25, Wednesday, November 1, Wednesday, November 8 and Tuesday, November 21 from 1:00-4:00 PM at the Midwest Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Galena, IL.

Pre-registration is required to attend the I on Diabetes program. To register, call the Jo Daviess County Extension office at 815.858.2273 or register online http://web.extension.illinois.edu/jsw/.

The registration cost is $40 per person (includes four sessions) or $65 per couple (with one set of handouts).
