2016 Plant A Row & Local Food Pantrys
Plant-a-Row is a national program that is working at a grassroots level to end community hunger.
The University of Illinois Extension - Stephenson County Master Gardeners have been coordinating the effort in the Freeport area since 2005 with over 3,000 pounds of produce donated. In 2015, they accepted five tons of garden fresh produce. All donations went to Freeport area food pantries and soup kitchens.Plant-a-Row encourages gardeners to plant an extra row of vegetables for donation, it also provides multiple drop-off times and locations for gardeners who have more produce than they can eat. With over 70 million gardeners in the U.S. a significant impact can be made to reduce hunger.
