4-H Metro Programs

University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development Metro Program is a national and international program administered by the U of Illinois Urbana Champaign focused on meeting the needs of the youth of Illinois' most populated communities by developing targeted innovative program models. Youth organizations already in existence can access the resources of the University via the Extension Educator, Sandra Prez., sprez@illinois.edu.

Where youth need additional opportunities to thrive, the educator matches adult volunteers with groups of youth and together they engage in meaningful hands-on learning experiences.  Lake County youth have participated in new programs during 2013-2014  including the Altria Robotics Clubs at 12 schools, youth serving organizations and the Waukegan Public Library.  There the middle school youth have received over fifty hours of high-quality science programming. In April 2014, the clubs participated in the First Annual 4-H Robotics Showcase, where the youth demonstrated their learning and creativity in Robotics and received trophies in 8 different categories.

Over 300 elementary school students are also participating in fitness activities at eight Lake County schools as well as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lake County. From first grade through high school, students move, dance and learn how to incorporate exercise into their healthy lifestyle.

Two of the newest innovations in 4-H youth programming include the Tech Wizards mentoring program.  At Tech Wizards middle school youth learn by doing using an array of high-tech equipment and their own creativity.  With the support of caring adults and high school mentors, the students are creating their own public service announcements as part of this 3-year program.

A unique collaboration with scientists from the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin, and middle school youth has created the “Library Investigators” a six-week program held at the Waukegan Public Library. Students are learning about Forensic Chemistry, through hands-on experiments, as they work to solve ‘crimes’!   More programs serving youth in Lake county are on the way.  Please check the website for updates!
