4-H members enrolled in the dog project for the 2012-2013 year will have the opportunity to participate in sessions which will further their knowledge of dogs, dog care, obedience, and showmanship. The first two sessions will be held at the University of Illinois Extension office at 6:30 pm on April 23rd & 30th. No dogs should be brought to these 2 meetings. These sessions will provide a welcome and a brief overview of this year's options. Members will need to bring copies of their vet papers, and rabies vaccinations are required. Also, members are asked to do some homework before the sessions: Homework assignment #1: Prepare a short talk that includes 3-5 facts about the breed of dog he/she is intending to show. Ideas would include acceptable colors & coat types for your dog, health issues specific to the breed, and what purpose your dog breed is supposed to serve (working dog, sporting dog, etc.). Homework assignment #2: An illustrated talk or demonstration without your dog in which you can discuss 1-2 facts on caring for a dog. Examples would include how to brush teeth, how to trim nails and stop bleeding if it occurs, or what types of combs/brushes are appropriate for your dog's hair.
Subsequent meetings will take place as follows:
May 7, 14, 21, 28 – Kinner Kennels with dogs – 6:30 pm
June 4, 11, 18, 25 – Kinner Kennels with dogs – 6:30 pm
If you would like more information about these sessions, please contact Amy Rebbe at the Extension office at 782-4617 or Toni Frank (Dog Show Superintendent) at 488-6253.
