Heat takes its toll on area soybeans in many ways. The main way is making soybeans lose more moisture than they can take up through the root and stem.
Area soybean fields are showing symptoms where there has been damage from nematodes and root rots. Nematodes tend to cause yellow patches, particularly in low areas of the field. Often these areas have a higher soil pH, and the combination of nematodes and lack of available micronutrients cause lighter leaf colors or even the dark green veins and yellowing leaves associated with iron chlorosis.
Other area fields are showing dead leaf material. In many of these fields there are disease organisms such as root and stem rots taking a toll. The lack of moisture with high heat has simply caused death of tissues.
