Sangamon County 4-H Member wins Illinois 4-H State Poultry Judging Contest!

Sangamon County 4-H member of the West Side 4-H Club edged out his competition by one point to claim the top prize in the 2017 Illinois 4-H State Poultry Judging Contest held Aug. 10 during the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

Daniel Kloppe, 15 of New Berlin, earned first place in the senior division, with Will County 4-H member Ben Mills, Peotone, taking second place.

Poultry Judging teaches 4-H'ers how to judge live hens, grade eggs, grade ready to cook poultry, and identify poultry parts. It also provides experience in organizing thoughts and defending decisions with oral reasons.

Other awards were given for the team and in the junior divisions. The contest was organized by Ken Koelkebeck, University of Illinois Extension poultry specialist.
