4-H Shooting Sports

The 4-H year runs September 1 through August 31. Abe Lincoln 4-H Shooters 4-H Club will offer opportunities in the following disciplines at varios times throughout the 4-H year: Archery, Air Rifle, .22 Rifle, Air Pistol, .22 Pistol and Shotgun. As details for sessions in each of the disciplines are confirmed a registration will be posted on our 4-H page, and details will be listed below. Offerings in each discipline depend on the number of certified volunteers, facilities, and resources/equipment available to us.

Archery - Youth who are 8 to 18 years old (age as of Sept. 1, 2016) are eligible, and equipment is available for participant's use. Space is limited, and registration is required. Typically we offer a 6 week series of sessions, approximately 3-4 times per year, indoors at Springfield Archery during Fall/Winter/inclement weather, and outdoors at Panther Creek at Chatham in Spring/Summer. As information and registration are available for each series, details will be posted here.

The first 6 week series of 4-H Archery sessions for 2017 took place during Jan/Feb., and the second 6 week series took place March/April. at Springfield Archery.

The third series of six sessions was held May 24, 31 & June 7, 14, 21, 28, 6:30 p.m., at Panther Creek Bow Hunter's Archery Range, 1 Gilreath Rd., at Chatham. The fourth series of six sessions is currently taking place at Panther Creek (July 26, and August 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.)

Air Rifle/.22 Rifle - The first series of 6 sessions was on Thursday evenings at Lefthander's Gun Club in Loami, and concluded on 10/20/16. A second six week series of six Rifle sessions was held on the following Thursdays: April 13, 20, 27 and May 11, 18, 25, at Lefthander's Gun Club, 9364 Rhea Park Rd, Loami, IL 62661. There was an opportunity for instruction in air rifle and .22 caliber, depending on the age of the youth and their interest. Youth ages 8-11 as of September 1, 2016, are eligible for air rifle instruction, and those ages 12-18 as of September 1, 2016 are eligible for instruction in both air rifle and .22 caliber. Air Rifle will be 6:00-7:00 p.m., and .22 will be 7:00-8:00 p.m. Registration is closed. If you would like to be added to a list to receive information about future sessions please call the Extension office at 782-4617.

Participants are NOT required to provide their own equipment. Youth ages 8-11 can bring an air rifle of their own, and kids age 12 and up can bring an air rifle and/or .22, if they have one they would like to use. Keep in mind, ages are as of September 1, 2016.

Air Pistol - 4-H offered a series of six Air Pistol sessions on the following Thursdays: February 9, 16, 23 and March 9, 16 & 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Lefthander's Gun Club in Loami. Youth ages 12-18 (age as of September 1, 2016), are eligible to participate, and equipment is available for participant's use.  Online registration is closed. If you would like to be added to a list to receive information about future sessions please call the Extension office at 782-4617.

Shotgun - Youth ages 12-18 (age as of September 1, 2016), are eligible to participate, and equipment is available for participant's use. In 2017 sessions were held on the following Friday evenings: June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7, 14, 21, outdoors at Lefthander's Gun Club at Loami.

Members enrolled in the disciplines in Abe Lincoln 4-H Club for the current 4-H year, and those who participated during the previous 4-H year, will automatically receive e-mail notification as new sessions get scheduled throughout the 4-H year. New youth interested in being notified about shooting sports opportunities offered in Sangamon-Menard should e-mail Sharon Lounsberry at slounsbe@illinois.edu to be added to the contact list. Indicate which desciplines you are interested in knowing about. Details will also get published in our 4-H Newsletter, in the "Register Online" section of our web page, and on our Unit 16 4-H Facebook page, as they are available, and press releases will be mailed to local newspapers.

Once details are available, youth will need to complete the online registration for each event. All participants are required to enroll in Abe Lincolns 4-H Shooters 4-H Club and complete a Risk & Health Form, and turn it into the Extension Office. A $20 annual program fee would be due with enrollment, if you have not already paid the annual fee to join 4-H for the 2016-2017 4-H year.

The 2017-2018 4-H year kicks off September 1, 2017! The following are 4-H shooting sports opportunities scheduled for the new year:

4-H Air Rifle - A six week series of sessions is scheduled to take place at Abe Lincoln Gun Club, located at 6250 Pec Rd, Springfield, IL 62711, on the following Thursdays: September 14, 21, 28, and October 5, 12 & 19. 4-H .22 Caliber Pistol  - A six week series of sessions is scheduled to take place at Lefthander's Gun Club in Loami, on the following Wednesday evenings: September 6, 13, 20, 27 and October 4 & 11. Interested in Volunteering?

Certified Instructors - Men and Women, ages 21 and older, are eligible to apply to become Shooting Sports Instructors. Shooting Sports Instructors are required to go thru training held by the Illinois 4-H Office. This training is offered twice a year, fall and spring, at 4-H Camp in Monticello, IL.

Instructor Assistants - Men and Women, ages 19 and older, are eligible to apply to become Shooting Sports Instructor Assistants. Assistants are required to go thru training held by the Sangamon-Menard 4-H Shooting Sports board and 4-H Staff.

All 4-H volunteers begin the application process by completing a 4-H Volunteer packet.

What disciplines we are able to offer in our county, and how many participants we can successfully accomodate, depends on the number of volunteers we have that are willing to get trained to work with our program, as well as availability of sites and equipment.
