We wanted to make you aware that we were notified last Friday from the State 4-H Office of a rule change in 4-H premiums for the 2012 4-H Show season.
According to the Bureau of County Fairs premium policy, 4-H exhibitors may be paid ONE premium PER CLASS NUMBER in any of our 4-H shows. This applies to ANY project area where you are allowed to exhibit more than one item in a specific class/class number. This will mainly affect livestock exhibitors who exhibit animals in show classes where the rules allow you to show more than one animal in a class.
The 4-H Foundation is looking for reliable, hard working teens to work this Summer in the 4-H Food Stand, located on the IL State Fairgrounds. Teens should be 14-19 years of age. 4-H membership and past experience in the food stand are a plus, but not required.
The food stand would open August 6, and continue through most of the Illinois State Fair. We realize that some schools begin before the State Fair is over, and we are flexible with workers in that situation. It is most important that workers be available August 6-12. Individuals interested in employment should contact Sharon Lounsberry at 632-7491.
Scholarship applications for the Sangamon County
4-H Foundation, and Menard County 4-H Scholarships are available on the Sangamon-Menard Extension website: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/lms/sangamon4h/3360.html. They are available in both Word and pdf format. The Word document is your best option because, other than the front cover page, you can: click below the questions and type in your answers; print the application; and save the document to your computer. The pdf file does not have that capability. Applications and references are due to the Extension Office by May 1 this year. Scholarships will be awarded at the County 4-H Shows.
Would you like to be eligible to compete to win one of four $25 cash awards, and learn a skill that will be of value to you for life? All you have to do is enroll in the 4-H Public Presentations Project by May 1, and then register online at https://webs.extension.uiuc.edu/registration/?RegistrationID=2883 to compete in this year's Sangamon-Menard 4-H Public Speaking Contest. If you are already a 4-H member, you would e-mail winkelma@illinois.edu (Menard County), or Duncheon@illinois.edu (Sangamon County) and ask them to add Public Presentations to your project list. If you are not currently a 4-H member, but would like to join, call Sharon at 632-7491 or Amy at 782-4617.
The contest will be held Saturday, June 16, 10:00 a.m. at the fairgrounds in New Berlin, as part of the Sangamon County Fair activities. Besides sponsoring the awards, the Fair provides participants one gate pass. Spectators will be charged gate admission. So, come on out and enjoy the fair while you are there!
This year there will not be a Horticulture Speaking and Demonstration Contest in Champaign, so youth that would like to do a speech or demonstration that has a horticulture focus should sign up to participate in the County Public Speaking Contest.
Are you a 4-H'er interested in learning or improving your sewing skills? Take our hands-on "Sew Easy" workshop and learn from the experts! Volunteers from the American Sewing Guild will share their love of sewing by showing 4-H members basic techniques, sewing terms, fabric selection, notions, and operating a sewing machine. Each participant will get the chance to make a "snap bag," which can be taken home at the end of the workshop. The workshop will take place at the Sangamon County Extension office, 700 S. Airport Drive, on Saturday, April 21 from 9 am to Noon. Cost for the workshop is $5.
Please register for this workshop online at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/lms/ or by calling Amy Rebbe at the Extension office at 782-4617. This class will be limited to 15 participants, so sign up early!
Ninety high school teens from thirty-six counties recently participated in the Great 4-H Debate held in Springfield on March 23-24. The event is one of the educational activities offered to teens through the University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development Program. Sangamon County 4-H members, Nathan Janusweski, Daniel Olsen, and Nicholas Sanderlin, were part of the delegation that learned about the legislative process first-hand as they researched, debated, and voted on "mock" bills in the Illinois House of Representatives. If you would like to find out more about opportunities available to youth through the 4-H program, please contact the Extension Office at 782-4617.
