Compost Bin Demonstration

Compost Bins are located in the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden, Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield

The demonstration garden is comprised of four garden areas. University of Illinois Extension Sangamon and Menard county Master Gardener volunteers maintain the garden and educate the public about the plant material and aspects of each of the gardens.

The gardens can be viewed from sunrise to sunset.

This project that began in 2007, contains five different compost bins.

To gardeners, compost if considered "black gold" because of its many benefits in the garden. Compost is an ideal material for garden soil. Adding compost to clay soils makes them easier to work and plant. In sandy soils, the addition of compost improves the water holding capacity of the soil. Adding organic matter in the form of compost to any type of soil can help improve plant growth and health.
