Prehoda wins Sr. Division of State Horse Speech Contest

Paige Prehoda, of McLean County 4-H Club, County Capri, is pictured here with her horse, Blaze.

Paige handily won the Sr. Division of Formal Speech in the 2010 4-H Horse Speech Contest held at the Universty of Illinois this past April.

CONGRATULATIONS, Paige!

When asked about her topic, Paige reported, "My speech was about controversial aspects to the competitive horse events, with a main focus on Western Pleasure. I posed the question on whether its worth the ribbon or trophy to potentially hurt your horse. I spoke about western pleasure horses not moving naturally, but much too slow and that causes a bad front end. Also, I brought up the aspect of injections that can cause a horse to move very mechanically."

4-H Youth Greet Parade Route Crowds

Memorial Day Parade 2010 began as a beautiful sunny day, a great day for a parade honoring all those who have served and are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. (Thunderstorms held off until after ceremonies!)

The McLean County Fair 2009 King and Queen led the 4-H contingent. Pictured are Greeenleafers 4-H Club, Linden Lead'em, HomeSpun 4-H and Bloomington Busy Bees 4-H Club. Also pictured is Brian Basting, past McLean County Extension Advisory Council member, and the owner and chauffeur of the convertible from which King, Danny Otto, and Queen, Taylor Dirks greeted the enthusiastic crowd.

Equus 4-H Club Assists Streator Tornado Victims

The Middleton farm was severely damaged during last June's tornados near Streator; they lost the horse barn, about 90% of what was in the horse barn, and had to put one of their children's horses down. McLean County 4-H Club members from the Equus 4-H Club helped to clear storm damage strewn throughout the horse pasture, and collected horse care and riding equipment from other McLean County 4-H Clubs for the Middleton family.

Pictured above: Storm damaged horse pasture, and the many "helping hands" and "helping hearts"! Those pictured are Equus 4-H Club members Nina Schenk, Jill Schenk, Haley Burger, Bill Schenk, Malia Burger and Dawn Burger. Danie Middleton and Darian Middleton also pictured with the group.
