McLean County Master Gardeners

2012 Local Award Recipients

Master Gardener of the Year

Chris Kraft was named the McLean County Master Gardener of the Year at the Master Gardener May 1 annual meeting. This award requires a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer service, service as an officer or committee member, and outstanding work as a leader in the training and/or promotion of the Master Gardener association. Chris has been the chair of Home, Lawn and Garden Day, the MGs largest fundraiser, for the past 2 years. She also leads the "Friends First" project at Second Presbyterian Church, and contributes to several other worthwhile projects, including the Community Cancer Center and Holton Homes. She has just been elected by the membership to serve as their next incoming President.

John English Award of Merit

Marci Fogerty received the John English award which is presented each year to a Non-Master Gardener who has contributed locally to the field of horticulture.

Marsha Fogarty is a trained architect and extremely knowledgeable about gardening and garden design. She is particularly interested in heirloom roses, garden maintenance and in getting her hands into the soil.

Marsha started volunteering at the David Davis Mansion in Sarah's Garden in 2002 and was a pioneer in the restoration efforts for Sarah's Garden. She worked closely with Steve McDaniel, the horticultural historian responsible for the garden restoration and planting plan, to develop the Computer Assisted Design (CAD) maps of the garden, which are updated periodically as research uncovers new information and as the restoration progresses. She also developed the master maintenance plan for the garden, helped train the Master Gardeners who volunteer in the garden, for many years chaired the garden restoration committee and most recently is the past president of the David Davis Mansion Foundation Board.

Her own garden has been featured on the Glorious Garden walk several times. She is a true community leader in gardening

Helping Hand Award

Sue Farrell-Stroyan was the recipient of the Helping Hand award. The Helping Hand Award is given to a Master Gardener who has contributed significantly in assisting individuals and the community in their role as a Master Gardener.
