McLean County Junior Master Gardener Projects

Unity Center Program

The Unity Community Center is a program developed by the University of Illinois Extension, Heartland Community College and the Town of Normal to provide after-schooling programming to approximately 40 children, aged 5-18. Junior Master Gardening became part of the program at Unity Center in 2003. The garden consists of 8 raised beds with garden pond in the center. The weekly gardening classes are held from early April until mid October. A wide variety of gardening experiences are offered by the Master Gardeners including growing perennials, annuals, and vegetables as well as lessons on insects, birds, and flower arranging, to name a few.

Holton Homes Children's Garden

This garden program serves a small group of elementary school children residing at the Holton Homes apartment complex. The garden is composed of 2 rectangular beds and some containers, and is located a block from the complex. Classes and programs are similar to that at the Unity Community Center, but on a more personal scale. The weekly meetings during the growing season take place either at the garden or in a community room.

Bloomington Junior High

This group consists of 10-12 junior high students and meets weekly throughout the school year. The garden club is responsible for the design and maintenance of garden areas near the entrance of the building, and the large interior courtyard garden, which includes a pondless waterfall in the center. The children work outside with Master Gardeners whenever possible and have an indoor class in the winter.

The following programs are not sponsored by the McLean County Master Gardeners, but are supported by our organization though consulting and teaching:
