Woodford County Master Gardeners

2011 Outstanding Master Gardeners

Gretchen Strauch Selected as State Outstanding Master Gardener

Gretchen Strauch, a Master Gardener from Woodford County, has been selected as a State Outstanding Master Gardener. This award was established to honor the best Illinois Master Gardeners. Each person selected is an exceptional example to Master Gardeners within their unit as well as others in the state. A maximum of 2% of statewide active Master Gardeners are recognized with this award annually.

Gretchen is from Washburn, IL and has been a Master Gardener since 2007. Since completing her training to become a Master Gardener, she has completed over 250 volunteer hours and over 275 educational hours.

Gretchen co-chaired the 2009-2010 Master Calendar Planning Committee and currently chairs the Client Services Outreach Committee. She has presented numerous educational programs throughout Woodford County.

Gretchen's volunteer hours include designing, planting, and overseeing the maintenance of containers throughout her home community of Washburn. She works with the Lion's Club in Washburn to plan and maintain their park and currently designed a butterfly garden for the park. She also designed, planted, and oversees the Memorial Park in Washburn and the helicopter display at the American Legion Post.

Gretchen epitomizes the meaning of what it is to be a Master Gardener. She is always ready to lend a helping hand, her knowledge, and ideas to any effort that makes our county a better place.

The award was presented on July 7, 2011 at the annual 2011 Illinois Master Gardener Conference--Back to Our Roots in Champaign, IL.
