Jerri Andrew, Workforce Development Coordinator, McLean County Chamber of Commerce, and Cathy Ahart, Community Development, Mid-Central Community Action, receive Friends of Extension Awards from Associate Dean Dennis R. Campion of University of Illinois Extension. With the advent of the "Welfare to Work" program, McLean County Extension saw a significant need to train individuals for making their way into the wide world of work. Extension teamed up with Community Action, and the Chamber of Commerce to meet the needs of the people who sought entry into the workforce. These organizations came together in an effort to train community members in workplace etiquette, problem-solving, prioritizing, and other job-related skills. This program has been in existence since 1997, with a total of 96 class participants. Its success reflects its necessity to the community. For their steadfast involvement in Job Partners, Extension would like to thank their friends and partners, The Chamber of Commerce and Community Action.
Wild Horses, Burros Are Up for Adoption
On May 6 the Bureau of Land Management will be conducting a Wild Horse and Burro Adoption at the Interstate Center in Bloomington. Up to 100 animals will be available. Since the program began in 1973, over 174,000 animals have been adopted.
The BLM is responsible for managing the wild horse and burro herds on Western rangelands. To maintain an ecological balance, excess animals are removed from the fragile rangelands, examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, wormed, blood-tested and then offered for adoption to good homes.
Prospective adopters must have sturdy corrals at least six feet high for horses and fivefeet tall for burrows, shelter, transportation and the means for caring for the animals. The adoption fee will be determined by competitive bid, with the minimum bid being $125 payable by cash or check. The fee helps defray the Federal Government's expense of roundup, veterinary care, transportation and administration.
The animals will arrive Friday, May 5 with viewing from 1 to 5 p.m. The hours for adoption are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 6.
For applications or information call 800-293-1781. Applications must be approved by April 28 in order to participate in first round bidding.

Financial Fitness Is the Goal of Money 2000
An estimated 65 million American families will fail to achieve at least one of their major life goals because they never developed a comprehensive financial plan. Just as the body must be healthy to meet life's challenges, finances must be fit to obtain a home, college education or save for retirement.
Financial fitness is easier than you might think, especially with the help of the University of Illinois Extension Money 2000 initiative, according to Mary Ann Fugate, University of Illinois Extension consumer and family economics educator. Money 2000 is a personal financial wellness campaign designed to encourage participants to set a personal goal and take action to achieve it by the end of this year.
Subscribers to the Money 2000 program benefit from the ongoing support and educational materials offered to help them achieve their goal. Support services often include newsletters, periodic educational seminars, computerized debt reduction analysis, and personal worksheets.
Although Money 2000 is available for everyone, it is especially beneficial for those who continue living paycheck-to-paycheck each month with no money left over to save.
"People at all income levels tell themselves they can't possibly save anything," Fugate said. "They think they need to spend every dime they earn just to support their current lifestyle. But when they make a decision to pay themselves first – to save money before spending the rest – they are often amazed at the results."
If saving money is your goal, Fugate offered some ideas to get you started.
Ask your employer to deposit money directly from your paycheck into a savings account or tax-deferred retirement plan, such as a 401 (k). It is always easier to save money before it goes in your pocket.
Think of small ways to reduce your spending. Skipping that donut and coffee on the way to work can add up to hundreds of dollars over time.
Save your small change. Every night, put a dollar bill and the loose change in your pocket into a can or jar. In a year, you might save more than $500.
Try to reduce your debt. Find a low-interest credit card and transfer your current balances.
Reconsider the importance of every expense. Ask yourself, "Do I need it or just want it?" "Can I live without it?" "Can I get the same or similar benefit in some other, less expensive way?"
Consumers can subscribe to Money 2000 on-line at http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/~m2000/ by following the easy steps, or by calling 309-663-8306 (ext. 169).
"It is easier than you might think to become financially fit, and best of all, it will pay a lifetime of dividends," Fugate said.
Money 2000 Tips
Before you buy a new car this year, consider waiting one more year. Instead of spending money on a car, put $2,000 into a ROTH IRA and let it grow for 20 years. At 8 percent interest, in 20 years you'll be $9,322 richer and you won't even remember what year you bought that new car!
An allowance can be a useful tool to teach children how to manage money. Receiving money regularly gives children practical experience in buying, saving for big purchases, and making financial choices. According to Zillion magazine's 1998 allowance survey, 43 percent of the children surveyed received a weekly allowance and 26 percent received spending money only. Kids given spending money averaged more money than other kids. However, kids who received an allowance were almost twice as likely to put money into savings than kids who received spending money.
Choosing and reviewing insurance policies can be a tedious task. It's often very confusing to know what the difference is between case management, chore services, long-term care, and skilled nursing care. To help you choose a long-term care insurance policy or review a current policy, University of Illinois Extension has available two updated insurance fact sheets: Long-Term Care Insurance Terms and Understanding Insurance Terms. For copies of these fact sheets contact your local Extension office.
Grants Aid Agriculture Education at Parkside Junior High School
An increasing number of students are learning that they are a part of agriculture not only because of the food they eat that is produced on the farm but by growing their own plants or hatching their own chicks through agricultural literacy programs. McLean County has received a grant from the Partners for Agricultural Literacy, a program coordinated by the Illinois Farm Bureau. This grant is supported by all major Illinois commodity organizations, industry groups and abribusinesses. In McLean County, this grant will be used to buy supplies to refurbish ag science kits for elementary school teachers as well as pay for an educator who presents school programs.
Seventh grade students at Parkside Junior High School will be participating in the McLean County pilot program beginning late April and concluding late May. This hands-on experience will give students an opportunity to learn more about the farming community that surrounds their school and home and actively participate in experiments to broaden their agriculture knowledge base.
The grant has been awarded in cooperation with Facilitating Coordination in Agricultural Education and the Illinois State Board of Education.
McLean County Classrooms "Chick It Out!"
Cindy Schempp and Steve Schwoerer are sharing a McLean County 4-H school enrichment program, "Chick It Out!" with area third grade classrooms. The "Chick It Out!" program is designed to give students a general awareness and understanding of the science aspects of chick hatching. It involves students in a hands-on experiment in the growth and development of "new life" as the project goes from a fertile egg to a hatched chick. The students will be introduced to the thrill of the hatch and possibly the disappointment of the hows and whys of embryology. A curriculum notebook, incubators and fertile chick eggs will be provided to each classroom teacher, as well as incentives for each student and teacher.
If you have the proper setting and are interested in receiving week-old chicks from this program, please contact Cindy Schempp at (309) 663-8306.
The "Chick It Out!" embryology project is a University of Illinois Extension/McLean County program partially funded with McLean County Farm Bureau support.
"Way To Grow!" McLean County Classrooms
McLean County fourth graders will be participating in the 4-H school enrichment program, "Way To Grow!" This plant science project provides students with the opportunity to learn about plant growth from seed to actual plant and will also include other topics that relate to plant development. Watch for onions, radishes and carrots to be growing in a fourth grade classroom near you!
Thanks to Extension Volunteers!
After celebrating National Volunteer's Week in April, the Extension staff wanted to salute the more than 1,000 Extension volunteers who assist us in delivering programs and serving McLean County residents. The strength of University of Illinois Extension programs lies with our volunteers who extend programs, serve in advisory or leadership roles, assist at large events, and multiply the efforts of the minimal staffing at the Extension office. Programs in agriculture, horticulture, family and consumer science, 4-H Clubs, schools, and COMPACT are greatly enhanced due to our McLean County volunteers.
As we assembled this list we were impressed by the more than 1,000 individuals who give of their time on behalf of Extension. Additionally, we were surprised by the many individuals who serve in more than one role within the Extension family of activities. This list does not include all the businesses who consistently either provide financial or staff support to our activities. Finally we would like to apologize in advance for likely missing some key people in our list on this page. The risk we take in publishing such a list is that we likely would leave off some of the obvious names, but we thought the risk was worth taking! So if we missed you this year please accept our apology and know we will try harder in our next "salute!"
A hearty Extension "thank you" to all of you who most certainly make McLean County a better place to live and work because of your efforts! Don Meyer, Unit Leader
