DuPage and Kane County Master Gardeners Give Tours at Ball Horticulture

Posted by Monica David -

Ball Horticulture is a huge supporter of Master Gardeners- not only in Illinois but across the United States. The volunteers appreciate the educational opportunities provided by Ball and also the chance to make a contribution by volunteering for Ball Hort.

Master Gardeners from both Kane and DuPage Counties in Illinois have a great partnership with Ball Hort and frequently give tours of their display and trial gardens throughout the summer.  Recently twenty DuPage and twelve Kane County Master Gardeners were trained as docents at Ball to assist with the Garden Conservatory Open Days this summer.

The Gardens at Ball have been the evaluation and testing grounds for the world's wealth of horticultural introductions and improvements for nearly 80 years. What began as a row trial garden for seed varieties in 1933 has grown to encompass over nine acres of display beds for annuals, perennials, cut flowers and vegetables, including the newest plants from the industry's leading breeders and marketers.

New this year to the Ball display gardens are big posters in the garden highlighting different types of gardeners with displays around each. For example a young father with a child, a display of pink and purple plants good for Mother's Day and a young man with no time to garden by a display of succulents. Perhaps the most popular poster to the Master Gardeners is one which depicts a "Master Gardener" who likes to try new and unusual plants.

The garden is open to visitors and to schedule your visit call 630-231-3600.  Visit Ball's website at
