The Master Gardener program promotes education and involvement of local adult citizens with a broad range of opportunities in hoticulture. It is a fun way to learn more about gardening, meet like-minded individuals, and help your local community. Science-based education and learning opportunities are provided to connect individuals with horticulture practices and help them become engaged gardeners.

Annual training sessions are provided. Topics include: botany, soil and composting, vegetables, fruits, trees and shrubs, landscape design, and turfgrass. Each topic is provided with an array of additional resources and references for further exploration.

Master Gardeners volunteer and complete continuing education to retain their cerification. Volunteer opportunities include: conducting adult and youth education workshops, maintaining community gardens, maintaining demonstration gardens, and providing researched horticulture guidance through the Horticulture Helpline.

The title "Master Gardener" is only used when conducting unpaid volunteer work with the University of Illinois Extension program.
