News Release

University of Illinois Extension in St. Clair County

The St. Clair Co. Board’s decision to eliminate funding support to University of Illinois Extension programming does not mean Extension programming will be eliminated. However; it does mean programming opportunities and staff responsibilities will be reviewed to determine priorities and realignment.

University of Illinois Extension outreach to youth and adults in St. Clair County include:  early identification and control of pest and disease problems for commercial growers; agriculture production and management information; 4-H Youth Development life skill training through numerous projects, workshops, show exhibitions, camps and conferences as well as science & technology opportunities and much more;  Master Gardener and Master Naturalist community project support through community garden produce to local food pantries and restoration of natural resource areas; nutrition and food safety training for school classrooms and school cafeteria personnel. Education is provided to people through 4-H clubs, in-school and community center sessions; group training sessions, webinars, website, publications and one to one consultation.

Extension programming in St. Clair County reaches a vast audience including agriculture and horticulture producers; Scott Air Force Base youth and families served through the Military 4-H program; 4-H clubs members; Metro 4-H leadership and life skill enrichment; home owners; landscape companies; county and city park employees and many more.

For more information about Extension’s many programs, visit the Unit website at https://web.extension.illinois.edu/mms

The St. Clair Co. Board allocation has never been adequate compared to the programming that has been offered to the thousands of county people. This latest news is a major alert to everyone for Extension Education to continue and expand in St. Clair County, sustainable funding MUST be secured.

Following are important ways to actively support this funding campaign:

  1. Attend a funding discussion session:
    1. Thursday, February 8, 1 PM or 6:30 PM
    2. Turkey Hill Grange, Belleville
    3. This is open to the public…..we welcome ideas, volunteers and more!
  2. Support St. Clair Co. Extension & Education Foundation fundraising events. The Foundation is dedicated to generating funds for the furtherance of Extension programs in St. Clair County. Upcoming fundraising events include:
    1. Trivia Night with Silent Auction, February 24, 6 PM at the Ag. Building in Scheve   Park, Mascoutah.
    2. Taste of the Area, Thursday, April 5, 2018, 5-8 PM, Regency Conference Center
    3. Dine & Shop at Eckert’s Restaurant/store with 15% to Foundation.  May date to be confirmed.
    4. Garden Tour & Plant Sale, June 2, 9 AM to 3 PM, Belleville
    5. Direct mail campaign, ongoing…..contributions are tax deductible.
  3. Keep County Board and State Legislators informed of the benefits of Extension programming to you, your family, the communities and more. Letters and personal contacts are important.   Information on St. Clair County Board can be found:  http://www.co.stclair.il.us/government/board/Pages/default.aspx In addition, State funding that had supported University of Illinois Extension has not been provided to the counties for 2 years. Letters and personal contacts to State Legislators who serve St. Clair County are important to keep them informed of the benefits of Extension education.  Legislators are scheduled for their Spring Break to be in their home districts, March 21-April 8.  This is a good time to make scheduled visits.

Your support to help secure sustainable funding is very important!
