Presidents Day!

Posted by Russel Higgins -

Several successful weeks of Ag programing in northern Illinois, including a trip to Jo Daviess County to discuss cover crops and the Northern Illinois Crop Management Conference held last week in DeKalb County. Over 100 producers and Agribusiness folks attended the two day event. This year we had an emphasis on soil and water and our presenters provided great insight. I'll be sharing some of that information in the upcoming days, starting with a tidbit from Dr. Ken Olson. Dr. Olson is a soil scientist with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences on the University of Illinois campus. Dr. Olson's presentation addressed the 2011 Birds Point levee breach that took place in May of 2011 and the results on agricultural acreage in 2011 and 2012. Upon returning to Cairo in 2012 Dr. Olson found that the Mississippi river had dropped almost 50 ft. from the flooded conditions of 2011 to the dry conditions experienced in 2012! What a difference a year  can make.

At the NIARC we are coordinating seed and product needed for 2013 research, planting time is getting closer!
