July 10th Agronomy Day Program - Doug Maxwell

Weed resistance update from NIARC Agronomy Day

On July 10th at the NIARC Agronomy day, Doug Maxwell, principal research specialist from the University of Illinois Department of Crop Sciences shared weed control research underway at the research center. Attendees had the opportunity to view herbicide, herbicide combinations and programs effectiveness on the spectrum of northern Illinois weeds in both corn and soybean settings. A collection of pigweed seedlings were on hand, including Palmer amaranth, allowing agronomists and farmers to hone their weed seedling identification expertise. Doug reminded his audience to continue to scout fields after herbicide applications and to be aware of populations of weeds that were not controlled. While Palmer pigweed and Giant ragweed are garnering most of the press, a number of counties were added to the expanding list of locations where glyphosate resistant Waterhemp has been confirmed. Northern Illinois counties added in 2013 included Kankakee, Will, Grundy, Kane, DeKalb, Whiteside and Henry.
