Precipitation

I hate to state the obvious, but it has a dry, very dry, summer. As of the end of July, at the NWIARDC we had gotten a little bit less than half of the normal precipitation for the year. In an average year, by July 31st, we would have gotten more than 22 inches. In 2012 this total was only 11.7 inches, 11.2 inches below normal (Table). In August, we have gotten two significant rain events, with 1.3 inches total as of today (August 17). This rain is sorely needed as soybean seeds are still developing and pods are struggling to fill out.

Air Temperature

Air temperatures were above average for July, with high temperatures 5.6 degrees above normal and low temperatures 4.2 degrees above normal.

Growing Degree Days

If you planted on May 1st, as of August 13th, there were 2,236 growing degree days (GDD). On average, to reach the dent growth stage in corn, 2,450 GDD are needed. To reach maturity, 2,700 GDD are needed. With the above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation, plants have been under incredible stress and many around the county are turning a reddish-brown color and drying down prematurely. At the NWIARDC much of the corn has dented and most of the soybean plants are teetering between the R5 and R6 growth stages (beginning seed and full seed at one of the top four nodes).
