Just how cold was it?: December 2013 Weather Summary

Posted by Angie Peltier - Weather

Historical weather data. The cold weather in December piqued my interest in determining just how the monthly average temperature fit among historical temperatures.

Through contacts at the Midwest Regional Climate Center, the City of Monmouth and the Monmouth Waste Water Treatment Facility, I found that temperature and precipitation data has been collected on a daily basis in Monmouth for 120 years, since 1893. The weather station has been moved several times since it was established in 1893: it was at the High School, at the old waste water treatment facility on Jackson Avenue, and several years ago it was moved to the Monmouth Municipal Waste Water Treatment Facility just North of town on Hwy 67.

Temperature

Northwestern Illinois Agricultural Research and Demonstration Center (NWIARDC). Average high and low temperatures for the month of December were well below the 30-year average (Table and Figure). The average high temperature was 5 degrees below average and the average low temperature was 7 degrees below average.

To put the December 2013 average monthly temperature into historical context, this data was compared to historical City of Monmouth weather station data through the Midwest Regional Climate Center.  December 2013 was the 9th coldest December on record in 120 years of record-keeping.  The average monthly temperature was 20.5 degrees, which was 7.4 degrees below the 30-year average.
