Weather summary: Have below-freezing high temperatures arrived early in 2014?

Early Below-Freezing High Temperatures? If it seems as if cold, winter weather has arrived earlier than usual this year, that's because it has.

We can compare the daily high temperatures in Monmouth on November 12 (31 °F) and 13 (26 °F), 2014 to those of 30-year period that the National Weather Service, the Midwest Regional Climate Center and others typically use to compare to current weather conditions: 1981 through 2010. While freezing high temperatures, or temperatures less than or equal to 32 °F, occurred as early as the first week of November in 2 of the 30 years, in 1 of the 30 years high temperatures didn't fall until the week of December 20 through 26 (Figure). Freezing high temperatures occurred most frequently November 29 through December 5. In other words, in 10 of these 30 years, freezing high temperatures occurred first 3 weeks later than our current cold snap!

2014 Weather Summary: July – October. Temperature and precipitation data listed below were collected at the Northwestern Illinois Agricultural Research and Demonstration Center (NWIARDC), as part of both the National Weather Service and Midwest Regional Climate Center's Water and Atmospheric Monitoring Networks. Note that the precipitation totals are compared to monthly averages from 1995-2010.
