Greenside Up Host Richard Hentschel discusses Cover Crops and troublesome weeds with Russ Higgins, Commercial Agriculture Educator from the Northern Illinois Agriculture Research Center. Cover crops are common throughout Illinois, but pose some challenges for farmers in Northern Illinois. In our area cover crops need to be sown before the Corn crop is harvested. Cover crop seeds are applied by airplane over the top of the existing corn crop. Russ and Richard also talked about weed management for the farmer and just how different it is from how a homeowner deals with weeds. One concern is that of an invasive weed that gets established in a field without a way to control it. Weeds that have developed the ability to resist an herbicide is always a concern as well. Just like the gardener, stopping the weeds while they are young is best
