October is National Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. Whether you're looking for a purebred pal or a mixed-breed friend, check out the terrific dogs waiting for homes at your local animal shelter. If you're thinking about adopting a dog and would like to do a bit more research, visit the website of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at aspca.org or that of the Humane Society of the United States at hsus.org. Both have extensive information for prospective dog owners.

We've just kicked off a brand new academic year here at the University of Illinois. For students who love companion animals, many of them are at a loss because they had to leave their best furry friend home with mom and dad. A terrific way for these students to get their pet fix is by volunteering at a local humane society. In addition to helping animals in need, volunteering also offers the added bonus of learning about animals through hands-on experience. Plus, it will look great on those vet school, grad school or job applications.

It is estimated that eight million cats and dogs enter animal shelters each year.  Half of the animals are adopted, while the rest are euthanized.  Spaying and neutering can prevent this sad situation, as well as help your pet live a healthier, longer life.
