State Fair Advisory Committee Openings

There are openings for a teen and adult volunteer from our area to serve on the State Fair Junior Department Advisory Committee. Applicants must have 4-H ties, and youth must be 15 years of age as of September 1, 2005. Terms are 2 years in length, beginning September 1.

This committee is responsible for the review, recommendations, and implementation of the non-animal portion of the Illinois State Fair Junior Department. This includes, but is not limited to, decisions relating to the dormitory, 4-H promotional windows, general 4-H exhibit classes, budgets, staffing, and exhibit space in the Illinois Building, University of Illinois Extension Building, and Jr. Home Economics Building on the state fairgrounds.

The State Fair Jr. Department Advisory Committee meets a minimum of three times per year. Two of those meetings are face-to-face meetings; the remaining meetings are via the University of Illinois teleconferencing system.

Exhibit Report Form Requirement Continues in 2005

4-H members age 10 and above are required to complete an Exhibit Report Form for all 4-H static exhibits for the 2005 Sangamon County 4-H Show, Menard County 4-H Show and the 2005 State Fair. The Project Exhibit Report is required at the County 4-H Shows to be considered for selection to exhibit at the State Fair.

Copies of the 4-H Exhibit Report Form can be obtained from local 4-H Club leaders, or may be picked up at the Extension Offices or downloaded from the Illinois 4-H web site at: http://www.4-h.uiuc.edu/events/annual006.html. It is available in both MS Word and PDF format.

4-H Family BBQ and Fun Night

All Sangamon & Menard 4-H families are invited to attend the annual 4-H BBQ and Family Fun Night on Sunday, July 10, at the U of I Extension Bldg. on the IL State Fairgrounds.

A delicious, affordable Pork Chop BBQ will be served at 4 pm, followed by games for 4-H'ers one and all! 4-H clubs from Sangamon and Menard counties are invited to enter a team in the Tug-of-War contest for cash prizes in two divisions. The evening will also feature the debut of the People's Choice Silent Auction, 4-H Clothing Project Style Show, games for youth of all ages (some of the traditional favorites along with some revived "old-time classics"), followed by refreshments and a Dance for everyone.

5:00-5:30 pm Clubs competing in the Tug-of-War are weighed

6:00-8:00 pm Style Show, followed by games

Sangamon 4-H Foundation Scholarships Available

The Sangamon County 4-H Foundation is currently accepting applications for several scholarships. One $1,000 scholarship, two $750 scholarships, and one $500 scholarship will be awarded at the 2004-2005 4-H Achievement Program to be held later this November.

Applicants for the $1,000 and $750 scholarships must have ten or more years of 4-H membership of which the final three years must have been as a Sangamon County 4-H member. Applicants for the $500 scholarship must have seven or more years of 4-H membership of which the final three years must have been as a Sangamon County 4-H member.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of interest to pursue a higher education, 4-H background, scholastic record, leadership abilities and community service. Applications may be requested by calling the Springfield office at 782-4617. The deadline for applications is September 1.

The Menard County 4-H Federation is currently accepting applications for two scholarships worth $500 each. The scholarships will be awarded at the 2004-2005 4-H Achievement Program to be held later this November.

Applicants for the scholarships must have seven or more years of 4-H membership of which the final three years must have been as a Menard County 4-H member.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of interest to pursue a higher education, 4-H background, scholastic record, leadership abilities, community service, and related criteria. Applications may be requested by calling the Petersburg office at 632-7491. The deadline for applications is September 1, 2005.

Club Group Award Opportunities

4-H clubs are invited to compete for County and State Club Recognition by completing the "Illinois 4-H Club/Group Report" form. The award application documents the club's activities in one of the following curriculum areas as listed in the 2004-2005 Illinois Clover: Agriculture; Community and Global Understanding; Environment and Natural Resources; Food, Nutrition & Health; Home & Family; Mechanics & Technology; and Personal Development.

Club leaders can get copies of the award application from the Extension Office, or off of the web at http://www.4-h.uiuc.edu/opps/90231.doc . This form was revised 2/2003, so please don't use old forms you have on hand in your Leader Resource Boxes. Contact the office for additional information. Applications are due to the Extension Office by August 9.
