Sonia Lopez is a community health educator in Cook County. In this capacity, Ms. Lopez is responsible for identifying health education and promotion needs of the residents of Cook County and designing and implementing programs to fill those gaps.
Ms. Lopez obtained a Bachelors degree in Psychology from University of Illinois at Chicago and earned her Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. Ms. Lopez has been in the field of public health for over 12 years. Her expertise includes program planning and evaluation.
Ms. Lopez uses her expertise to promote healthy behaviors to diminish the impact of health disparities in under-served populations. Ms. Lopez's repertoire of health topics have included teen pregnancy prevention, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, HIV, adolescent health, healthy relationships, and breast cancer to name a few. Ms. Lopez's is a certified MammaCare® Instructor. Current program offerings focus on breast cancer awareness and sexual and reproductive health. Ms. Lopez provides programming in English and Spanish.
U and I Aware of Breast Cancer (UIABC)
UIABC covers the risks for breast cancer and early detection methods. A large portion of the program is devoted to teaching participants about breast self-examination (BSE) using the MammaCare® method. The MammaCare method is the preferred method for conducting BSE. UIABC is presented in two—two hour sessions.
Off to A Good Start (OTAGS)
OTAGS addresses the physical, emotional and sexual development of youth in grades 5-8 in the following segments:
- It's Just Puberty (Two - 50 minute sessions)
Students discuss body changes and clarify misunderstandings about what kids experience during puberty.
- Our ins and outs (Two - 50 minute sessions)
Students learn about the male and female reproductive systems including the menstrual cycle.
- HIV: In the Know (Two - 50 minute sessions)
Students learn about HIV, how it affects the immune system, and explore facts and myths about HIV.
