Steve Wald joined Extension in May 2014 as communications director. From 2008 to 2014 he was assistant to the executive director for policy at the University of Illinois Prairie Research Institute, where he served on the senior management team and led a variety of communications and outreach initiatives. From 2006 to 2008, he was assistant to the chief for policy at the Illinois State Geological Survey. Prior to moving to Illinois, Steve was director of the California Hydropower Reform Coalition, a coalition of nonprofit organizations working to reduce impacts of hydropower dams on river ecosystems and recreation. Before that, he coordinated an interagency team of wildlife managers at the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Authority in Portland, Oregon. He has consulted for a variety of public and nonprofit organizations and was a summer fellow for the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee. Steve has a masters in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor of arts in the Science in Society Program, Wesleyan University.
