On Saturday, April 14, we started in the morning with a visit to a school in a rural community outside of Poltava where children were educated in traditional crafts and arts. The director of the school gave us a tour through the entire facility and also shared insights into the arts of weaving, drawing and embroidery.

After that visit the group was split and the females stayed back with Stephanie, another Peace Corps volunteer, to visit the local high school where Donna and Karyn held a youth program. Martina gave a presentation to a group of teachers about active teaching methods. The other group of agricultural experts meanwhile visited a large farm in the vicinity and learned about crops, applied methods and equipment.

In the evening we visited a traditional “Hutna” which is a kind of settlement with different buildings that the owner had reconstructed after examples of settlements during the time of the tsar. Along with traditional food, there were also presentations of traditional music, an open air theater play, and the opportunity to dance to Ukrainian music.
