Extension Council Meeting

12/16/2011

Meeting called to order by: President Ethel Muhammad at 11:48am

Council Attendance: Dr. Jack S. Brar, Barbara Cole, Richard Dobbins, Julie Emerick, Sylvester Hughes, Dennis Leaks, Ethel Muhammad, Regina Rivers, Karen Sweatt, and Willene Buffett. Extension staff in attendance included: Tabitha Hoskins, Karen Meyer, Leonard Parker, Greg Stack, and Tammi Tannura.

Icebreaker/Peacock: Everyone received three items: Hard Back Book (A Peacock in the Land of Penguins), CD-ROM (Peacock), and a Coffee Mug. Everyone was asked to read the book; a short and easy read. Extension members were informed that the next Council meeting would include an activity based around the book and the CD-ROM.

Old Business: President Muhammad asked for a motion to approve previous minutes. IT was moved by Regina and second by Sylvester to accept the minutes as printed.

New Business:

Administrative Updates/ Willene

Willene announced that she along with other Extension Administrators and two faculty members ((UIC and UIUC) screened and interviewed exceptional candidates for Cook county educator positions. The candidates interviewed for the following positions: STEM/Chemistry, Small Animal Health, and Community Health. Willene also announced that Rhonda Hardy the Consumer Economic Development Educator will be retiring on December 31, 2011. Willene indicated that decisions have not been decided when or if this vacancy will be filled. Willene also announced that she will be filling the open positions for Extension Program Coordinator for Horticulture and 4-H.

NE Regional Council Advisory Meeting/Julie Emerick

Julie Emerick is the representative to the NE Regional Extension Council Advisory. In brief Cook County was well represented. Julie thanked Willene and her staff for providing her with such credible information to distribute during the meeting. There were a lot of things discussed but she also highlighted these key points from that meeting:

ü The countryside office is completed evacuated but we are currently under a contract to pay for the space.

ü The Naperville Office (Regional Office) is filled to capacity.

ü Other counties are having funding problems, and Dupage County has ceased funding since 2007.

ü McHenry executive board is having challenges with adapting to the reorganization.

ü Social Media is the growing trend that will help publicize ways we can make smaller extension as bigger.

Greg Stack also was in attendance at the State Extension Advisory Council Meeting and he helped contribute to reporting the summary of the meeting. We need to make a change with the way we utilize website and use twitter and face book as a better mechanism to get our programs out.

Program Committee Job Description

The job description of the Program Committees was read and expressed as being vitally important to the Extension Council. Each Educator briefly discussed descriptions of their Plans of Work for the new program year. Each Extension Council Member was encouraged to assist in the implementation of programs or multiple areas of interest during this term. A teleconference will be scheduled early February to further discuss their involvement with programs. Many of the members have expressed interest in one or more areas.
