Kankakee County Executive Committee/Extension Council Meeting Minutes - Approved May 1, 2007

7:00 p.m. – Executive Committee

The meeting was opened with a review of the trust accounts, for the months of October and November. Members of this committee also met with the County Board members to discuss an increase in county based funds and review the FY-08 budget. The committee also decided that the amount of items to discuss should determine the time this committee is scheduled to convene. If there is one or two small items to be discussed, then the committee will start at 7:15 p.m. All members are to read the agenda to know what time to confirm meeting time.

7:30 p.m. – Extension Council Meeting

Attendence: Council Members: Jackie Boomsma, Mallory Boomsma, Annette Colbert, Francis Cordes, Scott Jensen, John Lilienthal, Jason O'Connor. Extension Staff: Beth LaPlante, Donna Nuger, and James Theuri.

Scott Jensen, Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m.

Review and Approval of Minutes for November 7, 2006 Meeting

Fran Cordes moved to approve minutes with corrections made. Jason O'Connor seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Committee Reports:

Executive (fiscal) – A brief report was given by Scott Jensen, concerning the October and November trust accounts. Motion to accept the trust account reports for October and November was made by Annette Colbert. John Lilienthal seconded motion. Motion passed.

Nominating Committee – No report given.

Ag & Natural Resources Committee – Brief report given by James Theuri. This committee is to meet on January 19, 2007.

Community & Economic Development – Communications Outreach Committee held a Town Hall Meeting on assets identifying the needs and resources for Pembroke. James and Beth both work with this group.

Family Life – Beth reported that this committee met in November and that they are not sure if they will be having a Child Care Conference because of the lack of Kankakee County participants.

Youth CommitteeFran reported that there is a meeting set for January 31, 2007.

Foundation – No report given.

Old Business:

  • Date for applications for additional staff has been extended to January 19.
  • Riverside Health Clinic in Pembroke is being seriously considered as a site for a satellite office for Kankakee County Extension. Beth has a scheduled meeting with a Vice-President of Riverside Hospital.
  • The Metro bus wrap will most likely be completed in mid-February. Beth is still in the process of choosing the correct pictures and submitting the final project order.

New Business:

  • Kankakee Naturalist Program – James covered this in a PowerPoint presentation. This program is designed to share information about environmental stewardship.
  • The Kenya Study Tour is an opportunity for people from Will and Kankakee Counties for people to travel to Kenya, June 6 – 23, 2007.
  • General Mills Grant for $10,000 to be considered for Pembroke Grade School. This involves nutrition and wellness. Beth and Barbara Farner are working with the Community Health Department at the University of Illinois.

Unit Staff Report:

  • Donna has been working with the following programs for the past couple of months: The Power of Youth Through Horticulture, a Special Education Program at BBCHS; Welcome to the Real World; Club Clover, Kankakee Resource Center and Yikes It's Snakes.
  • James gave a PowerPoint presentation that covered programs that occurred in November including: Pumpkins and More, Apples and More, Round Table Sessions, and Pembroke Soil Program Classes. Future programs James noted include: Kankakee County Vegetables Growers School, Soybean Workshop, Horse Basics 101, and Pesticide Safety Education Program.
