On a warm, sunny day on the Ball State campus, IISG met with Dr. Melody Bernot to find out more about her research on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). For the past five years, Dr. Bernot has traveled to streams and rivers across Indiana to document how these chemicals are entering waterways and what happens to them once they are there. In the summer and winter of 2010, she sampled in Lake Michigan and was one of the first to uncover important relationships between PPCP concentrations and factors such as location, season, and nutrient levels in the lake. In the fourth issue of UpClose, we chat we Dr. Bernot to get the details of the Lake Michigan study, how those results compare with her other PPCP studies, and what her discoveries mean for her work moving forward.
