Calling all pet owners...

We love our pets. In fact, 68 percent of households own pets as of 2012, according to the American Pet Product Association (APPA). APPA predicts that we will spend close to $60 billion this year on our pets, and a sizable chunk of that will be for pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

For a variety of reasons, these medicines and shampoos don't necessarily get used up. What happens when you no longer need Spot's medication? What do you do with the leftover steroids, antibiotics or other pills you brought home for your furry friend? Researchers would like to know and are asking pet owners to take part in a national survey.

Both pet owners and veterinary care professionals are invited to take part in Oregon Sea Grant's survey at http://tinyurl.com/PetWellbeingandEnvironment. The research team is hoping to learn how information is shared and what choices are made when households have unwanted pet medicines.

So be a sport and take 10 minutes to fill out the survey. Thanks!

The survey will be available until February 14.
