Midland FFA Visits Fifth Grades

                                                                                                               Midland FFA Visit Fifth Grades

Winter temperatures and snowy weather did not deter the annual Ice Cream Experiment led by Midland FFA in fifth grade classrooms.  FFA members recently visited Henry Senachwine and Midland schools as part of University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom efforts to provide educational experiences for all students.   After providing a brief background of the dairy Industry, the high school students described the three types of milk the students would be testing. They were to determine if using milk with different fat contents would be noticeable in a taste test. The class made a hypothesis and went to work. After vigorously shaking their unidentified mixtures, students sampled ice cream made with whole milk, 2% and skim. Some groups successfully matched the samples with the corresponding milk. Others were amazed at how they did not detect a big difference. Wrapping up the activity, FFA students explained that milk fat contributes to the rich creamy taste associated with ice cream. Midland FFA is part of a national organization for high school students interested in agriculture and leadership skills. Students participate in variety of local, regional, and state activities that exposes them to many career opportunities. If you need a reasonable accommodation, please indicate when registering.
