Summer Sizzle Shoot

NEWS RELEASE – PREPARED BY Anne Scheel

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION, Bureau-LaSalle-Marshall-Putnam Unit

The Summer Sizzle Shoot was held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Chillicothe Sportsmen’s Club in Chillicothe.  4-H members from Metropolis to DeKalb and everywhere in-between came to compete in this event. Youth registered to participate in either air rifle, archery, .22 rifle, or shotgun. University of Illinois Extension, Marshall-Putnam has hosted this event for 6 years.  The interest and skill levels of the shooting sports members have definitely increased over the past 6 years.

It was a beautiful day for the shoot. The wind was calm with overcast sky so there was little interference from the weather.  Each discipline offered 3 age brackets: Senior- 15-18, Intermediate- 12-14 and Junior- 8-11.

Celtan McGinni of Peoria County took 1st place in the senior division of sighted archery with a combined score of 452.  Archery includes a target and a 3-D shoot. Levi Nusz of Stark County took 1st in the intermediate sighted division with a score of 475, and Thomas Casey of Woodford County with of score of 446 took 1st in the junior sighted division.   Hannah Myers of Woodford County took 1st place in the senior non-sighted division with a score of 150. Amber Myers of Woodford County was the intermediate non-sighted winner with a combined score of 185 and the 1st place archer for junior division was Riggens Shafer of Stark County with a score of 259.

18-year-old Jason Schwind of Woodford County took 1st place in the senior division in shotgun hitting 41 out of 50 oscillating clay targets.  The intermediates shoot 25 straight and 25 oscillating clay targets; Cole Hayes from LaSalle County took 1st place in this division with a score of 48. Kole Stegman of LaSalle County took 1st place in the junior bracket hitting 30 out of 50 straight shots.

Air rifle and .22 rifle were held at the indoor range at Chillicothe Sportsmen’s club. These are the only disciplines that the youth are able to participate in 2 events.

Hunter Swanson of DeKalb County won the senior division of air rifle with a score of 260. Gabriella Hunt of Rock Island County took 1st place in the intermediate division of air rifle with 209. Isabella Hunt of Rock Island County was 1st in the juniors with a score of 151.

There was a short break after air rifle before .22 rifle began.  Hunter Swanson of DeKalb County shot his way to 1st place with a score of 189 in the senior division. Collin Haney of Woodford County shot a 150 to capture 1st for the intermediates, and Christina Snook of LaSalle County took 1st place for the juniors with a score of 109.

4-H shooting sports teaches youth safe and responsible use of a firearm and marksmanship. Members also learn the principles of shooting and archery. It helps develop life skills, self-worth and conservation ethics.

One mother stated, “My daughters have come at least 3 times and always enjoy it. As I sat with other parents whom I had never met, they commented positively on the event, the location, how well the volunteers work with kids.”

The Summer Sizzle Shoot would not be possible without the help of many volunteers.  Thank you so much to all of you who made this day go smoothly.
