Fieldcrest Third Grade Learn About the History of the Plow

Fieldcrest Third Grade Learn About the History of the Plow

“Who changed the plow for America’s farmers? Who changed a nation forever? John Deere, That’s Who!” So ends the book by Tracy Nelson Maurer with the same title. This book, published in 2017, was the introduction to the University of Illinois Ag in the Classroom lesson on producers and consumers with Fieldcrest Intermediate third grade students. The book tells the story of the need for a better plow to till the sticky Midwestern gumbo encountered by early settlers. After hearing the story, students understood the progression of the plow’s development.  A discussion followed on the difference between iron and steel. Students defined new vocabulary words like blacksmith, forge and gumbo, and identified the role of producers and consumers in our economy.  John Deere’s development of a steel blade plow was one of several inventions that were instrumental in expanding the agriculture industry. Farmers could now produce more crops than just needed by their immediate family.  To complete the lesson, students constructed and illustrated simple puzzles that showed the interconnection between producers and consumers.
