HSGS Kindergarten Are Studying Apples

HSGS Kindergarten Are Studying Apples

There is so much to learn about apples.  Young students can study their life cycle, their individual parts, their contribution to healthy eating as well as a variety of ways to use. There is a good assortment of books to read on this topic, both fiction and nonfiction.  To complement Henry-Senachwine’s kindergarten unit on apples, University of Illinois Marshall-Putnam Ag in the Classroom provided a program entitled “The Taste of Apples.” The lesson began with a reading of “Apples and How They Grow” by Laura Driscoll. This book describes the technique of grafting. Students learned that by grafting apple trees, growers know exactly what kind of apple will be produced. Students tasted and compared four different varieties of this fruit.  At the same time, they completed a science paper where they recorded their likes and dislikes. The closure of the lesson included a discussion of the important role bees play in pollinating apples.
