Putnam County Fifth Grade Complete “Incredible Journey”

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit

Putnam County Fifth Grade Complete “Incredible Journey”

“I love to draw,” one Putnam County fifth grader said as she worked on her Super Hero drop of water graphic novel. Students had just completed the “Incredible Journey”. This activity, provided by University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom, helps students understand water movement within the water cycle. Using dice, each student recorded their drop of water as it moved through a random path. Water might circulate between oceans, rivers, lakes, clouds, animals and ground water to name a few. Once they completed numerous paths they illustrated their results as a graphic novel, similar to a comic strip. Their water drop was the super hero. This activity required students to describe how water might move within the water cycle. The lesson is adapted from Project WET, a curriculum and activity guide developed by the Watercourse at Montana State University and the Council for Environmental Education.  For more information call University of Illinois Extension – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit Office at 309-364-2356. Extension offices are located in Princeton, Ottawa, Henry and in Oglesby on the IVCC campus.
