Planning and Design

II. Planning and Design

The time spent planning and designing can be the critical element in having a long-term, effective windbreak. Evaluating, analyzing, and measuring the area and facilities to be protected, determining what objectives you have for the planting and what natural conditions may impact the site’s location all are important factors in having an effective planting.

Importance of Planning
“Windbreaks for the home or farmstead should be carefully planned. The windbreak becomes an integral part of the site for at least 50 years. A well planned windbreak will enhance the property’s value throughout the years. The location and layout should ensure that the windbreak is a benefit and not a hazard.” (ISU Pm 1716)
