It’s a NEW 4-H Year….
The 2017-2018 4-H year began on September 1, 2017 and will end on August 31, 2018. September 1 of the current year will continue to be used to determine 4-H age.
And it's time to re-enroll in 4-H!
4-H Online will be closed for maintenance until September 15 when it will re-open for enrollment for the new 4-H year.
Your club leaders will hand out enrollment packets at your October meetings. Instructions will be posted on our website and will be included in your packets.
Deadlines will remain Feb. 1 for returning members and April 1 for new members.
Edgar County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE) would like to thank 4-H members and their families for donating baked goods to the food stand

What is Federation/
The Edgar County 4-H Federation is a group of older 4-H members in grades 8 and up. Federation provides older members with additional opportunities to make new friends, to develop leadership skills and to plan events/programs to meet their needs and interests. Cheryl Funkhouser is the Federation Leader. For the 2017-2018 4-H year, Federation will on the 4th Monday of each month from January through June (unless meeting time is otherwise noted).

Our meetings will continue to be leadership focused and 2018 will bring a new element to being a great leader….public speaking. Yikes...did you say public speaking?! Yes. Join us and learn how to shake off those nerves and speak well in front of one, five or an audience of 100. We will be working on some informational videos this year, along with some awesome activities just for Federation members. You won't want to miss it. See you in January!

Auction checks are printed and they will be in your mailbox very soon! Please be sure to cash your check ASAP as they will NOT be honored after 90 days from issue date. Due to outstanding checks from the 2016 auction the Association Board has decided that any checks not cashed after 90 days will be considered a donation to the 4-H Association. HOORAY FOR CLOVERBUDS!
Cloverbuds will hold their first meeting of the new 4-H year in October on Thursday, October 19 from 5:30-6:30 pm at the 4-H fairgrounds. This special club is for members who are ages 5-7 as of September 1, 2017. Enrollment information will be available at this meeting. 4-H CLUB CORNER
Club Leaders and Officers.....do you have news to share or an event to
promote for your club? Put it in the 4-H CLUB CORNER! This spot is reserved just for YOU and if we need more space….we'll make the corner bigger! Get your news to the Extension office by phone or email before the 20th of each month and we will share your news and information for you.

· Club scrapbooks and all award nominations/applications are due in the office on Thursday, November 2 by 4:30 pm to be considered for awards. Be sure that award apps have been signed by member, parent/guardian and leader. Late entries will not be accepted!
· Reminder that Ft. Sumpter's club meeting will be held on a different date/time for September only! Meeting date is Sunday, September 17 at 3 PM at the fairgrounds.

¨ Congratulations on working through the first year of 4-H Online enrollment. Re-enrollment for the 2017-18 year will open September 15. The site will be closed from Sept. 1 – 14 so new projects can be added. And speaking of new projects….
¨ Consider taking one of these NEW projects: Collectibles, Creative Writing, Coding in Visual Programming Languages, Coding in Text Based Programming Languages, Seeing i2i—Adventures in Diversity and Cultural Awareness, Free Range Robotics, 3-D Printing & Design, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Fiber Arts, Stained Glass Projects, Duct Tape Crafts, Paper Crafts, and Getting Started in Art (beginner level).
Edgar County 4-H Week October 2-6, 2017
· 4-H Family Skate Night at Twin Lakes Roller Rink on Thursday, October 3 from 6-8 PM. Free admission! Skate rental is $1-$3. Concessions available (on your own).
· 4-H DAY! Wear your 4-H club t-shirt all day on Wednesday, October 4. Show your 4-H spirit!
· FYI—Conservation Day, Thursday, October 5. Extension is partnering with Farm Bureau to bring this event to all 5th grade students in Edgar County.
LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM CLUB
We are excited to invite anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the 2017-2018 team. Participants must be 4-H age and will learn how to evaluate livestock as well as learn how to prepare and give a set of reasons. Our county has one of the most successful teams in the state with numerous members going into college judging teams (some on scholarships!). You are invited to join us on Sunday, September 10 at 3 PM at the 4-H Fairgrounds for an organizational meeting! Parents are required to attend with youth. We will be discussing meeting times, contest schedules and completing required paperwork. Our team will participate in 6-10 contests this year! Have questions or missed the meeting? 4-H Achievement Night
SAVE THE DATE! Our 2017 4-H Achievement Night will be held on Tuesday, November 14 at 7 PM at Community Bible Church, 200 S. High Street in Paris. More information coming soon!
Congratulations are in order for November...join us!
Achievement Night is our annual event held in November where we honor the achievements of our 4-H members for the 2016-17 4-H year. Awards are presented to our 1st Year Members, Cloverbuds, Leaders and Volunteers, Federation members, Outstanding 4-H'ers and 4-H Clubs. Special awards given are the Marlene Pratt Memorial Award, David Lindsey Swine Recognition Award and the Mary Frances Fruin Conservation (club) Award. Our new 4-H recognition awards will be presented in the My 4-H Experience area and Edgar County 4-H Awards.
New Award Application Program
The My 4-H Experience Award Application is a part of our new Illinois 4-H Recognition program and will replace the Standards of Excellence checklist form.
4-H members completing this form will be recognized as a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond or Emerald Clover at our 4-H Achievement Night in November. Diamond and Emerald Clovers are a very high level of recognition and those members will also be recognized at the State Recognition Banquet in the spring. A description of the requirements for each award level is listed below.
BRONZE—Complete 1 experience in each row.
SILVER—Complete at least 2 experiences in each row.
· At least 2 must be at the county level or beyond
GOLD—Complete 4 experiences in each row.
· 2 MUST be beyond the county level
DIAMOND—Complete 6 or more experiences in ONE area;
· 4 must be BEYOND the county level
· Participation activities cannot be used
EMERALD—Complete 8 or more experiences in ONE area;
· At least 4 must be BEYOND the county level
· At least 2 must be at the State or National level
· Participation activities cannot be used

All awards information and applications will be due to the Extension office on November 2. Late applications will not be accepted! If you have questions or need help filling out your application, you may contact Cheryl Funkhouser, 4-H Program Coordinator at 465-8585.

Ask for help if you need it. We know you've learned and accomplished a lot. You just have to be willing to tell us about your accomplishments from the 2016-2017 4-H year.
The Edgar County 4-H Award Application replaces the county medals recognition program. Award areas include: Community Service, Project Mastery, Leadership, Communications and Personal Growth. You may apply in more than one area. One application is necessary; however one essay will need to be written for each area in which you are applying .

ALL award applications are due in the office on Tuesday, November 2. Award applications will not be accepted after the deadline! Contact the office at 465-8585 if you have questions or need help filling our your Edgar Co. 4-H Award applications.
If you would like to join shooting sports, please contact Chris Milam, Coordinator at 822-9841. Shotgun and Rifle will meet through October; however Archery will resume in March.

Congratulations Trent & Jacob!
Congratulations to Trent Finchum and Jacob Maschino who were members of the Illinois State Shotgun team who competed at nationals in Grand Island, NE in June. The team came home with 2nd place honors in Shotgun division. This was Trent's last year in 4-H and we wish him the very best. This was Jacob's first year of eligibility for state/national competition. Well done! We are proud of you for representing Edgar Co. so well.
Save the Dates and Get Ready for Washington, DC!
Even though we just finished the summer of 2017, we're already making plans for next summer's Illinois' Citizenship Washington Focus trip! The dates have been set for Saturday, July 7 to Saturday, July 14! Registration will open in mid-October, so start YOUR planning now to join us on this once-in-a-lifetime 4-H experience!
Citizenship Washington Focus is for 4-H members ages 14-18 by May 1, 2018. Our delegates will travel by bus or air, depending upon the number of final delegates who register. Teens explore the federal legislative process through workshops and hands-on sessions, tour historical sights and museums, provide youth voice on issues that concern them, visit federal legislative offices, and meet teens from other states. The 2017 cost to youth was $1025, with financial assistance from the Illinois 4-H Foundation. Our 2018 costs have not been finalized.

CONGRATULATIONS to Steve Terrell who was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame. This award was presented by the IL 4-H Foundation on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Thank you for your many years of dedicated service, Steve!
Congratulations to Mackenzie Burgin who represented Edgar County in the Master Showmanship contest at the Illinois State Fair on August 11. Mackenzie won 1st place showmanship in cattle and 2nd overall in the Master Showman contest. Way to represent Edgar County! We are proud of you!
Congratulations to Hope Gillaspie who placed 4th in showmanship on July 18 at the Illinois State Jr. Horse Show. We are proud of you, Hope!
Congrats to Taylor Clark who participated in the Illinois 4-H State Dog Show on August 26-27 in Champaign, IL. Taylor placed 3rd overall in dog obedience. Way to go, Taylor! We are proud of you!

We just could not do this without YOU! I receive compliments each year about how nice our fair is from folks from all over. Our fair is so great because of all of you.
